Why should I get counseling?

If you're reading this you're trying to decide if counseling is for you.

  • You're feeling overwhelmed, burdened, anxious and probably pretty unsatisfied with the way things are going.  You may be worried.
  • You've talked to friends but it didn't fix anything.
  • You've thought it through a million ways and still nothing is better.
  • You may have even talked to the people you think are causing your upset - to no avail!
  • You're probably daydreaming a lot, losing concentration, losing sleep or sleeping too much, and maybe you're eating too much or not enough. You might be losing your temper a lot too.
  • You may find you're looking for things to distract you from your troubles..like food, alcohol, drugs, working more or "playing" more. And this isn't really working either.
  • Finally, you may have developed health problems like high blood pressure or stomach problems or aches and pains that are unexplainable. You're tired and irritable.

If this sounds like you, the first step is to get a good medical evaluation to rule out any physical causes for your distress - physical and emotional. You may not know this, but some medical conditions actually have emotional symptoms... like sluggish thyroid.  You may have exclusively emotional symptoms but have a physical problem. So it's very smart to see a doctor first.

But if this sounds like you, and you've determined there is no medical cause for your distress, the fact is you are an excellent candidate for counseling.

Now you might be thinking....

  • "Why should I tell my problems to a perfect stranger?"
  • "I should be able to figure this out myself!"
  • "I should be able to take care of my own problems!"
  • "I'm embarrassed that I've gotten myself into this mess, I can't talk to anyone about this!"
  • Or "how in the world does counseling help?"

These are such common objections, and many people report that these thoughts stop them from getting help.

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

  1. The counselor is specially trained to listen, to understand and sort out your struggle with you.  They are great consultants and caring people.  They can help you move beyond embarrassment to real problem solving.  That is their job! They do this work because they are compassionate and understanding people in general.
  2. Professional psychologists, counselors and therapists are trained to know that people's behavior is usually the result of confusion, fear, anger and other very powerful emotions.  These emotions are hard for people to identify.  Counselors can truly help you understand why you do what you do.  And they have no interest in judging you. They can help you identify the solutions that make sense to you.
  3. The objectivity of the therapist keeps the process ethically sound.  The therapist has no agenda, no PERSONAL interest in your situation and so can be objective and help you achieve the outcome you prefer!  The agenda is yours!
  4. Life's problems are complex and confusing. Sometimes we do things and we do not know why.  Have you heard the old saying "two heads are better than one!"  Well why struggle if a trained, unbiased professional can provide guidance.  What you haven't figured out in weeks of thinking, ruminating, worrying, avoiding and consulting friends...can often be clearly figured out with the help o a therapist in a relatively short time.  Figuring it all out yourself can be a daunting task.  Getting consultation can speed the process of healing, fixing, resolving and moving on to really enjoy life again.

SO THINK ABOUT IT...

  • There is clarity of thinking that an objective professional can bring to you in your consultations.
  • The therapist only wants to help you understand yourself better and is not interested in judging you at all.
  • The counselor's vast experience and training can be a wonderful resource and can truly ease your burden.
  • The professional counselor sees lots of clients with many and varied serious problems. Your problem is probably not the worst the counselor has encountered!
